China Mobile OTT Video Service Monitoring Using Mividi IMS120

Introduction:

China Mobile, known as the world’s largest mobile service providers, is an integrated telecom service provider in China. It not only provides mobile services, but also provides landline and Internet services to consumer and business customers. Recently China Mobile has been rolling out OTT video services nationwide.

In order to meet the content security regulation by the Chinese government and superb video quality demanded by their customers, China Mobile has to perform real-time monitoring for their OTT video services.

The Anhui China Mobile is the provincial head-end of China Mobile in Anhui province that is responsible to serve customers in the entire Anhui region. China Mobile has over 30 million customers in Anhui province alone.

The China Mobile in Anhui has chosen Mividi IP Video Multiviewer Monitoring System IMS120 in order to ensure the highest quality video services and 24 hours of safe broadcast required by the government.

Requirement Specification:

China Mobile Anhui head-end currently provides 280 live OTT video services using HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) format. Each HLS service only contains a single profile stream at this point, although this may be expanded in the future. The source of the video programs are provided from national licensed content providers. The goal of the monitoring project is to monitor the streaming video out of CDN servers which is the same video as viewers will see.

The key requirements for this China Mobile monitoring project include:

  • Real-time monitoring of 280 HLS video services
  • Support multiviewer display of 33 SD video and 33 HD videos at one-time. Support round-robin rotational display of all video channels.
  • Each monitoring server can support two (2) display screens at the same time to play different video programs.
  • Real-time monitoring for video and audio errors including frozen and black frames, mute, video loss, audio loss, volume too high or too low, brightness anomalies, color bar, bit rate changes. Able to set the sensitivity and threshold.
  • Support error-alarms to the user and display video programs with error in penalty boxes.
  • Flexible video panel layout to support large-scale real-time display of key programs and rotational display for normal programs on the same screen.
  • Individual display panel (Picture in Picture) can be configured independently to include different number of video programs for rotational display.
  • All alarms and error messages can be saved in the system logs, with user-friendly database query functions. Error logs and reports can be generated and exported.
  • API for database access for real-time stream error report generation to be displayed with other system-wide key performance index (KPI).

Mividi Solution:

The Mividi IMS120 is a broadcast transport stream monitoring system for viewing video and audio services, analyzing transport streams, logging errors, generating alarms, and recording input streams. The IMS120 was developed to automate monitoring and error diagnosis at digital head-ends for broadcast, cable and IPTV service providers. A single Windows system can complete tasks previously done by several different pieces of equipment.

The system supports a number of different input formats, including TS over UDP, RTP, HLS, RTMP, RTSP and MPEG-DASH and provides IP layer and TS layer analysis, as well as error monitoring on video and audio streams.

Using the Mividi IMS120 system, the system will continuously monitor all 280 services all the time, even for the programs that are not displayed on the multiviewer screens due to video rotation. Any stream errors and video/audio errors can be detected and alarmed without delay, and also displayed on the multi-viewer screen. In addition, the multi-viewer can be configured to show video programs with errors in special penalty boxes.

Each IMS120 provides both multi-view interface and TS View interface to show the TS analysis results. Users can have a separate small screen to display the TS analysis results, and perform any configuration and control tasks.

In this application, the customer has used three servers, each of which can monitor up to 100 channels and display 22 video programs using two large monitors at the same time. About four sets of videos are rotated in round-robin mode at any interval around 45 seconds. The picture above shows the layout of the video display monitors.
